Wondering What Costume to Wear to Work for Halloween? Here are Some Tips to Consider.

Wondering What Costume to Wear to Work for Halloween? Here are Some Tips to Consider. - Michigan Human Resource Consulting Blog | Sage Solutions Group - Halloween_Pic(1)

With October 31st fast approaching, many of us are gearing up for Halloween. This year, Halloween falls right in the middle of the work week making it likely that many of us will wear a costume to work. In fact, according to USA Today, Americans are expected to spend nearly $3.4 billion on their Halloween costumes this year. Men will spend $96 on average, while women will spend $77. The decision regarding what costume to wear can be a stressful one. This blogger has been known to take a vacation day on Halloween just to avoid the “what should I wear” drama.

To help with the decision, Business Insider Magazine listed the top ten Halloween costumes for 2018 as predicted in a data pool gathered from Lyst and Pinterest. According to these sources, the top ten costumes are as follows:

  1. Tonya Harding
  2. A Riverdale character
  3. A '90s icon
  4. A warrior of Wakanda
  5. A flamingo
  6. Edna Mode
  7. An ABBA-inspired dancing queen
  8. A cosmic fairy
  9. Frida Kahlo
  10. A cow

If this list has inspired you, before you make or purchase a costume to wear to work, there are several factors that you should keep in mind.

  • Do you have any outside appointments or meetings that would make a costume inappropriate?
  • Can you complete your work day safely and appropriately with the costume on?
  • Avoid all references to things that may be offensive to others (religion, politics, gory or demonic characters, etc.). Wearing that Trump inspired wig might seem funny to you but could offend others.
  • Weapons, even fake ones, have no place at work!
  • Avoid wearing a costume that is too revealing. If your costume violates your dress code policy, you could be explaining your choices to human resources.
  • Never force co-workers to dress up for Halloween, it should be their personal choice.

Should you take part in the festivities, Sage Solutions Group wishes you a safe and Happy Halloween!
